# Framer vs WordPress for a startup website

Comparison · 6 min read · By [Utkarsh Dhairya Panwar](https://www.utkarshdesign.com/about) · Updated 8 Oct 2026

**For a 10 to 30 page startup site edited by a small team, I'd pick Framer: nothing to host or patch, and marketers publish without a developer. Pick WordPress when content is the business or you need its plugins. Wix and Squarespace fit sites that take bookings or sell products.**

## The difference is who maintains it

WordPress is open-source software. It's free, and you choose where it runs, which theme it uses and which plugins it loads. That freedom is why it powers so much of the web. It also means someone has to own updates, hosting, backups and security, since an outdated plugin is one of the commonest ways a site gets compromised.

Framer is a hosted product. Hosting, updates and the CDN are Framer's job, so you give up some control and get a site nobody on your team has to babysit. For a seed-stage startup with no web developer, that trade usually decides it.

A note on where I stand: I'm an official Framer Expert and the sites I ship are in Framer. I don't build on WordPress, so the WordPress side here comes from teams who moved to me from it. A WordPress developer would see it differently.

## Framer vs WordPress for a 10 to 30 page SaaS site

| | Framer | WordPress |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Setup | Design and build on one canvas, publish to Framer hosting | Pick hosting, install, choose a theme or have one built, add plugins |
| Editing after launch | Visual editing on the page itself, plus content-only editor roles | Block editor for content; layout changes depend on how the theme was built |
| Maintenance | None on your side | Core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security, ongoing |
| SEO basics | Titles, descriptions, clean URLs and a sitemap handled in the product | The same, usually through an SEO plugin, with more knobs |
| Speed | Hosted on a CDN by default | Depends on hosting, theme and how many plugins load |
| Extending it | Framer plugins, code components, embeds | The largest plugin library of any CMS, plus full code access |
| Blog and content ops | CMS collections, limited by plan | Built for it: authors, roles, scheduling, revisions, categories at scale |
| Leaving | The site lives on Framer's hosting | Take the files and database to any host |

## What each one costs to run

The cost models are different shapes, so comparing headline prices misleads. Framer is a subscription per site. On its October 2026 pricing page, a typical startup setup on Pro (owner, two layout editors, one content-only editor) comes to $30 + $40 + $10, so $80 a month, with nothing else to pay for hosting or updates.

| Line item | Framer | WordPress |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Software | Included in the plan | Free |
| Hosting and CDN | Included in the plan | Paid separately; managed WordPress hosting costs more than basic shared hosting |
| Theme | None; the site is designed on the canvas | Free, premium licence, or a custom build |
| Plugins | Mostly free canvas plugins | Free and paid; premium SEO, forms, backup and security plugins are often yearly licences |
| Updates and security | Framer's job | Someone's hours every month |
| Layout changes | A designer on the team | Often a developer, depending on the theme |

Framer is a fixed, predictable bill. WordPress is cheap software whose costs show up as hosting, licences and someone's time, and for a small team without a developer those maintenance hours are where the cost hides.

## When each one wins

- Pick Framer when the site is mostly product, feature, pricing and comparison pages, your team ships new pages often, and nobody wants to own a server.
- Pick Framer when design quality is part of the pitch. Motion and layout live on the canvas, so what's designed is what ships.
- Pick WordPress when content is the product: a high-volume blog, several authors with editorial review, or a publication-style site.
- Pick WordPress when you need a specific plugin (membership, LMS, complex forms, ecommerce) and the Framer alternative is a workaround.
- Pick WordPress when you must self-host, for compliance or because your team already runs it well.

There's a middle path: the marketing site in Framer, and a large blog or docs on whatever your content team already runs, under the same domain structure. It's more to set up, so only do it when the content operation needs it.

## Where Wix and Squarespace fit

Founders sometimes put Wix or Squarespace on the same shortlist. Both are built for a business whose website takes bookings or sells things, as their plan pages showed when I checked in October 2026.

| | Wix (and Wix Studio) | Squarespace |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Built for | Small businesses that need apps: bookings, stores, events. Wix Studio targets agencies | Small businesses and creatives who want a ready-made look |
| Selling online | Native ecommerce on higher plans | Native ecommerce on paid plans |
| Bookings | Built in on higher plans | Through Squarespace's scheduling product |
| Free option | Free plan with Wix branding | No free plan, a 14-day trial |

If your site has to take an appointment and send a reminder, Wix does that out of the box, where Framer would need two other tools glued in. If you want a polished shop with guardrails, Squarespace is hard to make look broken. For a SaaS company whose site explains a product and books demos, the comparison worth making is usually Framer vs Webflow.

## Moving to Framer without losing traffic

The platform rarely decides rankings. Page structure does. At xPay, restructuring 10+ Framer pages doubled indexed pages on the same platform, and my Framer SEO guide covers how. When you move from WordPress, Wix or Squarespace, the risk is broken URLs. Inventory every live URL, redirect each one that changes before the domain switches, and only move the blog if it's small enough for Framer's CMS.

## Questions people ask

### Is Framer cheaper than WordPress?

Not always. WordPress software is free, but hosting, premium plugins and developer time add up. Framer is one plan per site with hosting included, so the bill is predictable.

### Can Framer handle a blog?

Yes, with its CMS, which suits a startup blog or changelog. If you publish daily with many authors and editorial review, WordPress is built for that.

### Is Framer better than Wix?

For a startup or SaaS marketing site, usually yes: more design control and faster publishing for designers. For a business that needs bookings, a store or lots of built-in apps, Wix is the more practical choice.

### Can you sell products on Framer?

Not natively. Framer has no built-in store, so teams connect Shopify, Lemon Squeezy or payment links. If selling is the site's main job, WordPress with a shop plugin, Wix or Squarespace fit better.
