# How to hire a freelance product designer

Guide · 5 min read · By [Utkarsh Dhairya Panwar](https://www.utkarshdesign.com/about) · Updated 8 Oct 2026

**Write a one-page brief with the problem and the number it should move. Shortlist three to five designers whose portfolios show shipped work and results, and ask each about a real decision. Never ask for free spec work, and sign a contract covering IP, files, revisions and overlap hours.**

## First, check it's a freelance job

Freelance works when the problem has edges: one flow, one website, one audit, one launch. It struggles when you need design every week across product, website and brand, because a freelancer leaves just as they've learned the product. If that's you, my guide to hiring your founding designer covers the full-time route.

- Good fit: a redesign of onboarding, a Framer marketing site, a UX audit, the first flows of an MVP.
- Poor fit: "own design" with no defined problem, or work that needs daily decisions from someone inside the company.
- In between: a fractional arrangement, where someone works a fixed number of days a month on an ongoing product.

## Write the brief before you look at anyone

A brief turns "we need a designer" into something a designer can quote. It also filters people, because the good ones reply with questions about it. One page is enough, and my design brief template has every field with two filled examples.

If you only write four lines, make them these. What's broken, and how you know. The number that should move. Who uses it, including anyone who has to approve or install it. What you want back: flows, screens with every state, a prototype, a review of the build. A designer can price those four lines; without them, every quote is a guess.

## Reading a portfolio in ten minutes

Skip the Dribbble shots and open one case study. Look for the problem stated plainly, a decision the designer made and why, and what changed after it shipped. Pretty screens without that middle part tell you about taste and nothing about whether the person can solve your problem.

My CodeAnt write-up, how we doubled trial-to-paid, has that shape: the step where trials stalled, the decision, and the result. Whoever you shortlist, you should be able to find the same three parts.

Then check the live product against the case study. Most freelance work is public, either as a website you can visit or an app you can download. Anything that shipped should be easy to find, and a site the designer also built tells you whether they can finish.

## Questions to ask a designer, and good answers

| Question | A good answer sounds like |
| --- | --- |
| Walk me through one decision you'd make differently now. | A specific screen and a reason, not "I'd do more research" |
| How did you know it worked? | A named metric, support trend or test |
| What would you need from us in week one? | Access, data, a person to ask, a decision-maker |
| What's out of scope in what I sent you? | They push back on something, politely |
| How do you hand over to engineers? | States, edge-case notes on the frames, a review of the build |
| When are you online in my time zone? | A fixed window, not "whenever you need" |

The fourth question does the most work. A designer who agrees with every line of your brief is either very lucky or not reading it closely.

## Trial task or not

Don't ask for free spec work. The best freelancers decline, so you end up filtering for people with spare time. A design made without access to your data also tells you little about how they'd work with it.

If you want proof before a bigger contract, pay for a small first piece with a real output: an audit of one flow, one screen redesigned with all its states, or a week on the actual problem. A scoped audit makes a good first purchase because it's useful even if you don't continue.

## The contract, in plain terms

| Clause | What to write |
| --- | --- |
| IP | All rights in the work transfer to you on payment of each invoice |
| Files | Work lives in your Figma and drive from day one, not the freelancer's |
| Scope | The brief, attached, plus a line saying changes are quoted separately |
| Revisions | How many rounds per deliverable, and what counts as a round |
| Payment | Milestones tied to deliverables, or a monthly invoice for retainers |
| Overlap | The daily window both sides will be online, in both time zones |
| Confidentiality | A short NDA clause, plus whether the work can appear in a portfolio |

I keep files in the client's workspace from day one, so nothing is lost if the engagement ends early, and you should expect the same from anyone. For rates by region, see my guide to freelance product designer cost.

My own freelance work has been for xPay, HelpNow (YC W20), Entvin, OceanFriends and Zania. To talk about your project, the hire page has the details.

## Questions people ask

### Where do I find freelance product designers?

Referrals from other founders first, then portfolios on Contra, Dribbble and LinkedIn. Shortlist from case studies with results, not from shot galleries.

### Should I pay a freelance designer hourly or a fixed price?

A fixed price for a well-scoped piece. Hourly or a monthly retainer for ongoing or open-ended work. A clear brief is what makes a fixed price possible.

### How long does it take to hire a freelance designer?

About two weeks if the brief is ready: a few days to shortlist, a week of calls, then a contract. Most delays come from writing the brief after the calls have started.
