# Where to find a designer for your startup

Guide · 9 min read · By [Utkarsh Dhairya Panwar](https://www.utkarshdesign.com/about) · Updated 8 Oct 2026

**Start with referrals from other founders. For a website, look at Framer Experts or Contra; for brand work, Dribbble; for a full-time founding designer, YC's job board or Wellfound. Toptal and Arc pre-vet candidates for a fee. Upwork has the most designers and leaves the most vetting to you.**

## Match the channel to the designer you need

"Designer" covers very different hires. A founder who needs a Framer site in three weeks and a founder who needs a first full-time product designer should look in different places. I'm a founding designer who also takes freelance work, and I'm on the designer side of a few of these, including Framer Experts and Contra.

| You need | Look first | Then |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A product or UI/UX designer for a project | Referrals, LinkedIn | Contra, Toptal or Arc if you want pre-vetted people |
| A website designed and built in Framer | Framer Experts directory | Contra, Dribbble |
| Brand identity, logo or graphics | Dribbble, referrals | A small studio if you need a whole system fast |
| A full-time founding designer | Referrals, YC's job board (if you're in YC), Wellfound | LinkedIn search and direct messages |
| Steady design help without a hire | A fractional designer via referral | A design subscription for marketing assets |

## The channels, compared

Unranked, grouped by how founders use them. Fees are what each platform published when I checked in October 2026; they change, so confirm before you sign anything.

| Channel | Best for | How you pay | Speed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Referrals and founder networks | Any hire where trust matters more than price | Whatever you agree with the designer | Fast when someone vouches; slow if your network is thin |
| Framer Experts directory | Framer websites | You pay the expert directly. Each card shows a starting budget, such as from $5K or from $20K | Days to shortlist |
| Contra | Freelance product, web and brand work | Freelancers pay no commission. Clients pay a flat fee per payment (up to $29 on the free plan) plus card processing | Days |
| Dribbble | Brand, visual and website design | Client fee of 5% on the first $500 of a project, falling after that; job board $150 a month | Days to a couple of weeks |
| LinkedIn | Product designers and full-time roles | Messaging a Service Page is free; Request proposal sends your brief to matched providers | Slow to search, good once you're in conversation |
| Upwork | Short, well-defined tasks | Marketplace fees on payments; its fee pages didn't load when I checked, so read them first | Fast to get proposals, slow to filter them |
| Toptal | Longer contracts with a vetted senior designer | Hourly, part-time or full-time rates, plus a flat $79 monthly subscription while you use it | Hires in under 48 hours, by Toptal's own claim |
| Arc | Vetted remote freelancers or full-time hires | Nothing until you hire, per Arc | Arc claims 72 hours for freelance, 14 days for full-time |
| YC's job board (Work at a Startup) | Full-time founding designers, YC companies only | Free for candidates; listings show salary and often equity | Weeks, like any full-time hire |
| Wellfound | Full-time startup designers | Job posts are free; job ads from $200; managed recruiting $500 a month per role plus a 10% placement fee | Weeks |
| Design communities | Referrals to people others have worked with | Free to ask | Unpredictable |
| Agencies and studios | A full brand or website system with a team behind it | Project fees; Clutch profiles show each studio's minimum project size and hourly band | Weeks to start |
| Fractional designers and subscriptions | Ongoing work without a full-time hire | Monthly. Fractional studios commonly list from around $5,000 a month; Designjoy lists just under $5,000 with pause or cancel anytime | Days to start |

## How to vet on each channel, and the red flags

| Channel | How to vet there | Red flag |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Referrals | Ask the referrer what the designer owned and what they'd hire them for again | "They're great" with no project you can see |
| Framer Experts | Open their live sites on a phone and check speed and layout | Ranking rewards Framer plan sales, recency and trust score, not client reviews, so the top card isn't proof of quality |
| Contra | Read the case studies and client reviews on the profile, then ask for a short call | A service listing that promises everything at a fixed low price |
| Dribbble | Look past the shots to a live product or site the designer can link to | Only concept shots, no shipped work |
| LinkedIn | Check that their posts and portfolio describe the same work | A title that changes depending on who's asking |
| Upwork | Write a precise brief and judge how well the reply restates your problem | Copy-pasted proposals that don't mention your product |
| Toptal and Arc | Use the trial period on a small, real piece of work | Assuming the platform's vetting replaces your own portfolio review |
| YC's job board and Wellfound | Read the portfolio before the first call and ask for one deep walkthrough | A portfolio with no named startup or dates |
| Agencies | Ask who will do the work day to day and see their own portfolio | Senior people in the pitch, juniors on the project |
| Fractional and subscriptions | Ask how product work is handled in a queue of requests | One request at a time, when you need someone in your planning |

Two things surprised me when I checked the official pages. Contra now charges clients a flat amount per payment instead of a percentage. And Toptal lists a flat $79 monthly subscription in its FAQ rather than an upfront deposit, which is what most older articles still say.

## Why referrals still come first

In GoDaddy's 2022 survey of 204 small business owners, 60% asked other professionals when looking for a web designer, and 59% preferred someone they knew. Startups are no different. A founder who has worked with a designer can tell you the thing a portfolio can't: what happened when the plan changed.

Ask specific people one to one; a group chat gets you names without context. "Who designed your onboarding, and would you hire them again?" gets better answers than "anyone know a good designer?". If you're in YC, the founder network and the job board are the obvious first stop.

## How to vet any designer in 30 minutes

1. **Minutes 0 to 10: the portfolio**: Find one case study from a real company. Check the role, the dates and whether the work shipped. Skip anything that's only concepts.
2. **Minutes 10 to 15: a live link**: Open a site or product they designed on your phone. If they say they build, check it loads fast and the layout holds up.
3. **Minutes 15 to 25: one walkthrough**: Ask them to explain one project as if you were the founder then: what was broken, who decided, what shipped, what they'd change.
4. **Minutes 25 to 30: your problem**: Describe your product in two sentences and ask what they'd look at first. Good designers ask questions before they suggest anything.

For a full-time first designer, add reference calls and a paid trial. My guide to hiring your founding designer covers contracts, equity and interviews, and the founding designer portfolios page shows 20 real examples of what good looks like.

## Where I fit, and how I checked

I'm one option, so I've kept myself out of the comparison above. I'm a product designer based in India, an official Framer Expert, and the founding designer at CodeAnt AI (YC W24). I take freelance product, website and brand work.

[Hire me directly](https://www.utkarshdesign.com/hire): What I take on, how a project starts, and my starting prices on the pricing page.

- Fees and policies come from each platform's own pages, read in October 2026: Framer's Experts directory and help articles, Contra's commission-free and client-fee pages, Dribbble's hiring and fee pages, LinkedIn Help, Toptal's FAQ and screening page, Arc's homepage, Wellfound's recruiting prices, Designjoy's site and Clutch's help centre.
- Upwork's pages returned errors when I checked, so I've described its model without numbers.
- The GoDaddy figures come from its 2022 "What clients want" survey of 204 small business owners.
- Nothing here is sponsored, and no platform knows this page exists.

## Questions people ask

### Where do startups find good designers?

Mostly through referrals from other founders. After that it depends on the work: Framer Experts or Contra for websites, Dribbble for brand, and YC's job board or Wellfound for a full-time founding designer.

### Is Contra or Upwork better for hiring a designer?

Contra suits startups hiring for product, web or Framer work: freelancers keep all their earnings and clients pay a small flat fee per payment. Upwork has far more designers, so plan for more filtering.

### How much does Toptal charge to hire a designer?

Toptal's FAQ lists a flat $79 monthly subscription on top of the designer's hourly or full-time rate, with a trial period of up to two weeks. Rates depend on the designer.
