Sports website design for live, high-traffic pages

Work · Updated

Sportskeeda NFL Standings 2025 page on a laptop, with AFC East and AFC West tables showing wins, losses, win percentage, points for and against, and streaks

Sports sites are read in glances by huge, mixed audiences while the data changes underneath, so I design for scan speed. At Sportskeeda I designed the NFL and IPL live-score pages for 20M+ monthly users, restructured their tables and navigation, and worked on the advertiser landing flows.

What's different about designing for fans

  • Glance reading. A fan checks the score between overs or during an ad break. The match state has to be readable in a second, and the layout can't jump when it updates.
  • Mixed expertise. Power users wanted every stat, while readers in regions newer to a sport needed a simpler view. So data density became region-aware: a lighter default where the audience was newer, with full depth one tap away.
  • Advertisers are users too. A free sports site runs on ads, so the people buying them need flows that make each ad format clear before they commit.

The most useful decision was treating pre-match, live and finished as three states of one page rather than three pages. The layout stays put and the content inside it changes, so a fan who refreshes mid-match finds the score where it was a minute ago. Tables follow how fans of each sport already compare: NFL standings put wins, losses and PCT next to the team name, while a cricket points table keeps points beside net run rate.

The advertiser landing flows got their own pass, and campaign CTR rose 10%.

How this work usually runs

On a live content product I start with traffic and behaviour before drawing any screens: which pages spike during matches, which regions read what, where people bounce. Then come the tables and menus, and the page states as one layout. Advertiser and sponsor flows get a separate pass at the end, because they fund everything else.

Questions people ask

Have you designed for a live sports site at scale?

Yes. At Sportskeeda I worked on the NFL and IPL live-score pages, which serve 20M+ monthly users, and on the advertiser landing flows.

Do you design news or editorial sites?

My media work is live sports pages. Scan speed and density work the same way on news, but I haven't designed a newsroom CMS and I'd say so up front.

Can you design a podcast or audio app?

I designed SoundSphere, a 4-week podcast app concept with AI summaries you hear before the full episode. It shows how I think about audio, but it never shipped, so it has no results.
