Guide · 7 min read · By Utkarsh Dhairya Panwar · Updated

Public 2026 rate data puts a mid-level freelance product designer at about $65 to $100 an hour in the US, $41 to $62 in the UK and $15 to $39 in India. Freelance MVP design is commonly listed at $3,000 to $15,000. My own prices start at $4,500/month.

Second Talent is a hiring firm that builds its UI/UX ranges from published employee pay, adjusted by country and checked against freelance rates. The IT Jobs Watch figure comes from UK contract ads for the product designer title. They measure different things, which is why the UK day rate looks higher than the hourly band.

Rates by seniority

ExperienceUS hourly rateWhat you usually get
Junior, 1 to 3 years$52 to $77Clean screens from a clear brief; needs someone to frame the problem
Mid-level, 3 to 6 years$65 to $100Owns a flow end to end, runs a usability round
Senior, 7 to 10 years$85 to $127Frames the problem, pushes back on scope, works directly with engineers
Staff or principal, 10+ yearsAround $158Sets direction across a product or several teams

Rates are from Second Talent's October 2026 guide (US benchmark). Other countries scale down roughly in line with the regional table. The descriptions are mine. A senior designer often costs less in total because they cut scope early, which an hourly rate hides.

The spread is wide because very different jobs share one name. A cheap "landing page" is often a template with your copy dropped in. A site rebuilt around new positioning, with a CMS and conversion work, sits at the top of the range or above it. For a line-by-line view of MVP design, see my MVP design cost guide.

The four ways designers price work

ModelHow it worksGood forRisk for you
HourlyBilled per hour trackedSmall or unclear tasks, ongoing tweaksOpen-ended; you pay for ramp-up time
Fixed projectOne price for defined deliverablesA website, a new feature flow, MVP screensAnything unplanned becomes a change request
Retainer or fractionalSet capacity each monthContinuous product and site workPaying for capacity in quiet months
Productised auditFixed price, fixed deliverableFinding what's broken in onboarding, checkout or a dashboardOnly as useful as what you do with the findings

I'd avoid hourly billing for anything longer than a week. It rewards slowness, and it makes founders nervous about every question the designer asks, when the questions are usually where the value is.

What moves a quote up or down

  • How sharp the problem is. "Redesign onboarding" could take months. "Users drop at one named step" is a focused job.
  • How many states each screen has. A dashboard view with empty, loading, error, partial-data and no-permission states is five designs.
  • Whether research is included. Recruiting and running usability tests takes time, and it's the part most cheap quotes leave out.
  • Design only, or design and build. Designing a Framer site and building it are separate pieces of work, even when one person does both.
  • Who writes the copy. If nobody on your side owns the words, the designer does, and words take longer than layout.
  • How many people approve. Five stakeholders with sign-off can stretch a two-week project into six.
  • The domain. Developer tools, payments and anything regulated need learning time before the first screen.

How to get a quote you can compare

  1. Name the outcome: Say what should change and how you'll measure it: trial-to-paid, demo bookings, tickets on one flow. A designer can price an outcome far better than a screen count.
  2. List what's in and what's out: Pages, flows and screens in scope, plus the ones that aren't. "Onboarding, not settings" saves a week of back-and-forth.
  3. Share what already exists: Analytics, session recordings, support tickets, the current Figma file, brand assets. Support tickets are often the clearest brief you have.
  4. Name one approver: One person with the final call, and a realistic turnaround on feedback.
  5. Buy a small first phase if scope is fuzzy: Pay for a short audit or discovery phase, then price the main work from what it finds. Neither side has to guess.
